MY MUSHROOM FARMING JOURNEY

Starting My Mushroom Farming Journey: Why I Chose to Grow Oyster Mushrooms

For a long time, I’ve wanted to share more about my mushroom farming journey, something I mentioned on this blog but never truly opened up about. Today feels like the perfect day to finally begin.

I started mushroom farming with a simple goal: to build something small, steady, and meaningful. Something that could grow with me, challenge me, and fit into my everyday life as a mum. I didn’t have a big farm, fancy equipment, or years of experience. Just curiosity, courage, and a desire to learn.

Like every new journey, mine began with research and dozens of questions. Which mushrooms should I start with? How many bags should I prepare? What do I need to avoid contamination? And honestly… I made mistakes even before my first bag was fully colonized. But that’s the beauty of this journey — it’s real. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine.

Why I Chose Oyster Mushrooms

-They are beginner-friendly

-They grow fast

-They are nutritious and popular in the local market

-They fit in small spaces and don’t require a lot of equipment

I chose oyster mushrooms because they are easy to start with and have a ready market here in Kenya. Still, every stage has its own lessons — incubation, fruiting, cleaning, sterilising, humidity, mold issues — and I’ve had to learn a lot through hands-on experience.

This blog series will be my open journal. I’ll share:

*How I prepare my bags

*What I’m learning about contamination

*The challenges I face

*My wins, big and small

*And eventually, my first harvest and selling journey

If you’re curious about mushroom farming, thinking of trying it, or just following my story, I hope this space teaches you something and reminds you that growth doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to begin.

Welcome to my mushroom journey. Let’s grow together. 🌱🍄
